Mr. Manuel Campo.
Sir:
In the last conversation we had with you, you asked us for some references on the gestation of our science, as well as a series of complementary data on the historical process that culminates in the overthrow of the government of our Planet.
As regards your repeated doubts, expressed by you lately, concerning our identity, we can satisfy you little beyond the reasoning we set out for you in our penultimate report.
LET US ANALYSE TWO OF YOUR MOST SIGNIFICANT DOUBTS.
It is inconceivable that you should express yourselves so correctly in French or in Spanish and claim to come from another inhabited star.
We do not understand the value of an objection which, formulated in those terms, lacks all dialectical meaning. We believe with every justification that the fact that our brothers express themselves at present within any of the Earthly linguistic groups provides no proof either for or against our genuine origin. On another occasion we shall offer you a historical summary of our first arrival on this Planet, which took place in a region of southern France in 1950. It was not too difficult for our brothers to learn the first words of the French language in a rudimentary way, thanks to the chance collaboration of a native peasant, almost an adolescent. This first basis facilitated the subsequent linguistic reconstruction.
If you came, as you say, from that star you call UMMO, what interest moves you to operate anonymously? How is it that the press and government circles are not informed?
It is interesting to note that this question is put to us by almost one hundred per cent of the Earthly OEMII (Human Beings) with whom we have established communication.
What is most surprising is that both you and the great majority of the correspondents in various nations with whom we establish contact enjoy an intelligence quotient above the Standard, since an objection expressed in such terms is evidently puerile.
Undoubtedly the motives that impel you to direct your polemical elements in this direction would have to be sought in the “Influence that science Fiction literature has exerted on the subconscious of all Earthmen”.
You have stereotyped the image of extraterrestrial visitors invading the Planet with an exuberant and showy flow of spaceships, while anthropoid or perhaps monstrous beings descend from the vehicles before the astonished eyes of the human masses.
The most simplistic form of this reasoning was already expressed to us in similar terms by one of your North American brothers.
How is it that, being able to do so, you do not wait until there is a gathering in front of the Capitol (He was referring to the one in WASHINGTON) and land on the great esplanade? In that way nobody would doubt that you come from UMMO.
Quite apart from the fact that we have serious doubts that such a spectacular arrival would really vouch for our origin, the kindly North American did not seem to reflect much on the extra work that all the ambulances and clinics of the Capital might have to bear that same afternoon.
Of course there are less drastic, less novelesque means of making ourselves known... Only we have more powerful reasons for trying to prevent the Earthly Social Network from learning of our presence through the usual channels of dissemination.
The people like you who have spoken with us or received our reports barely reach the figure of (Two hundred), spread among the various nationalities, and we can assure you that, setting aside a few exceptions, all your fellow correspondents remain within the limits of a reasonable doubt.
This must be so, and it corresponds logically to the mental schemes typical of every intelligent OEMII, who must reject “A PRIORI” all dogmatism and probe the truth protected by an attitude of healthy distrust.
THEY ENCOURAGE AND ADVISE HEALTHY DOUBT.
Your suspicion and that of your brothers does us no harm at all, and you are perfectly right to exercise that critical function aimed at unmasking imposture, fraud or alienation.
For our part, being interested in living among you anonymously, such a climate of scepticism undoubtedly favours us.
We have therefore found the formula for dialoguing with you without crossing a threshold that would be harmful to us; our contacts with Earthmen are suggestive enough for you, immersed in a moderate state of intrigue and interest, “Not to break off your relations with us”... even while resisting accepting our origin, while we try, on the contrary, not to give you reliable evidence that would constitute an alarm call for the Social Network of OYAAGAA (Earth).
You, your brothers and we ourselves all benefit from this interesting collaboration, until in the not too distant future our Superiors modify the policy to be followed with you.
IMPARTIAL ADVICE TO MR. CAMPO.
In short: Our impartial and objective advice, after summing up your present situation, is this. You have been surprised, so you say, by our erudition in International Law, Political Law, Sociology and Philosophy of Law in the course of our conversations.
You cannot fit this lived experience with the hypothesis put forward that we may be alienated Jurists or perhaps Law students (As you suggested in our last talk) who want to play a joke on you. You yourself conclude that you cannot conceive of such intelligent Gentlemen devoting themselves to telephoning you for the sole purpose of amusing themselves.
On the other hand you assert “That it breaks all logical moulds even to accept the possibility that we were born on another inhabited star”.
We do not know whether you accept this last position (An extremist position whose physiological or scientific basis we cannot guess), since you remain so interested in our sending you more detailed accounts of our History, unless collecting them constitutes for you an inconsequential source of amusement.
MR. CAMPO, DO NOT BELIEVE US.
On another occasion you indicated that you were beginning to reconsider once again the possibility that we were not lying on this point. You expressed it as if afraid of having offended us.
No, Mr Campo, your doubts and cyclical states of credulity and incredulity do not offend us in the least; what is more, our loyal advice is this:
DO NOT BELIEVE US. Confine yourself to studying our conversations, which you recorded on magnetic tape. Analyse our notes, compare the data we have given you. If they have value for you, that value will transcend the secondary fact of whether we were born on UMMO or are Earthly brothers. For our part, we CAN Assure you that our contact with you was “VERY VALUABLE” for our study of the Earthly OEMII.
If, on the contrary, you judge the content of those typewritten sheets and those long telephone debates to be sterile or trite, tell us how we can compensate you for the time lost, since the only ones who have benefited have been ourselves.
This is a strange situation in which you and your other Earthly brothers, if you are faithful to the classical postulates of logic, must harbour certain doubts about our testimony. It would be irrational to identify as a man arrived from a distant astral mass the first individual who telephones you, however much erudition he may reveal in the field of Jurisprudence or Political Economy.
THEY REFUSE TO VIOLATE THEIR OWN TRUTH.
But we, even in the knowledge that we shall not be believed, cannot in this case violate our own truth.
If we come from UMMO we cannot, for example, soften this disconcerting statement by insinuating to you that we were born in Tibet.
In short, we do not inform you about our origin so that you will accept that assertion, but because proclaiming reality must be a function independent of the credulity or scepticism of those around us.
