CLARIFYING REPORT FOR MR. D. FERNANDO SESMA MANZANO.

While I was dictating the paragraphs contained in the report we enclose, concerning our habitual practices in the UIW preceding sleep; our kind Spanish friend who types all our notes drew our attention, surprised, to a statement we made in the said report.

Quite logically we believed it was not necessary to add any clarification on a matter that earthlings ought to know, since it is a physical concept common in all elementary treatises of this science. Otherwise we would be obliged, every time we utter a word or state a commonplace assertion, to prove it in the light of conventional earthly science.

We refer to the statement we inserted by way of example:

( .. Installing an earthly balance inside a room to compare two masses: One kilogram of fodder or straw in one of the pans and one kilogram of lead in the other pan, observing that the pointer of the balance tips in favour of the lead...).

We observed a gesture of smugness and sarcasm in our friend (a commercial expert who helps us), and the aggressive, biting question of someone who in his ignorance rejoices inwardly at “having caught us in an error”, and although he afterwards humbly acknowledged his mistake, his gesture filled us with sadness.

Not because of the ridicule into which an ignorant person sinks who, in trying to correct his brothers, commits a more serious error, but because of the unhealthy tendency that drives you to humiliate your neighbour when he makes a mistake; because of the haste with which you judge the failings of your brothers, without first subjecting them even to a cursory analysis to verify that it is in fact an error.

We do not mean by this that the most suitable or moral attitude consists in always keeping silent and raising no objections. On the contrary: You earthlings must be driven by a veritable obsession to train yourselves, to educate yourselves, to learn. And to do so you must ask, ASK WITHOUT TIRING, raise objections when you do not understand something. But ALWAYS with humility, with caution, with a mind predisposed to admit that reason MAY NOT BE ON YOUR SIDE. Rejecting all dogmatism and prejudice, which at bottom are one of the factors that make you unhappy on this planet.

Aggressively adopting an attitude of doubt towards the statements of others; lying in wait to pounce on a brother, accusing him of being wrong in order to humiliate him before others and feeling inwardly a morbid joy of sadistic triumph, is a sad way of not evolving, of stagnating in the immobile stage of those alienated by dogmatism.

It will be enough for you to read an elementary treatise of Physics to recall a principle you call by the name of ARCHIMEDES' PRINCIPLE. Every mass immersed in any fluid (LIQUID, GAS, PLASMA) is subjected to a dynamic thrust opposite in sign to the force of gravity. This Principle holds in every gravitational field. The THRUST FORCE has a magnitude equivalent to the weight of an IDENTICAL VOLUME of the FLUID DISPLACED by that mass.

That is: A kilogram mass of iron inside a container full of mercury WILL NOT WEIGH ONE KILOGRAM WEIGHT. Nor will the KILOGRAM of lead weigh exactly one Kg. inside a room full of the FLUID AIR. And the KG mass of fodder or straw will be subjected to a still greater thrust because of its greater volume.

So it would be a fallacy to assert that one Kg. mass of lead weighs the same as one of straw if we make the comparison in the air, as usual. That would only be true (AND ONLY HALF TRUE, SINCE OTHER FACTORS NOT STATED HERE COME INTO PLAY) if you carried out the weighing in an ABSOLUTE VACUUM).

Of course the difference is almost imperceptible and you would need a balance of some precision to verify it; that is why we gave it to you as an example in connection with our kinaesthetic sensitivity, capable of discriminating small dynamo-muscular differences.

We are sending you this supplementary report to prevent a false interpretation. You need not make it known to your friends and relatives if, as is to be expected, they do not adopt a pedantic critical attitude towards the observation mentioned. But should it be otherwise, it will be useful to read it to the objectors to clear up misunderstandings. We understand that we ought always to act in this way whenever there is a risk, in the course of the reports, of being misunderstood. But it will not escape you that the supplementary explanations would have to multiply to infinity. Imagine what mountains of typewritten pages such a report would sometimes amount to.
